What You Need for This Patriotic Porch Garland

Supplies List

Pro Tip: Test your lights before you start. Make sure every bulb is working before you staple a single flag.

How to Make Your DIY American Flag String Light Garland Step by Step

This is genuinely one of the easiest DIY projects I have ever shared here on Life on Summerhill. Follow these steps, and you will have a beautiful finished garland in no time.

Before you begin

Before you begin, lay out your string lights and place one flag between the lights. This will help you determine how many flags you will need. Once you determine the number of flags, iron them out if they are wrinkled.

Pro Tip: Use a hair straightening iron to smooth the flags out. Test the tip of the flag to make sure the material doesn't melt. If your flag is made of plastic, I would not recommend ironing it.

Step 1 — Remove the Flags from the Sticks

Next, slide each flag off its stick. If you bought Hobby Lobby flags, they slide right off with no tools needed. If your flags are stapled to the stick, use a staple remover to free them gently without tearing the fabric.

Lay all your flags out in a row so they are ready to go when you start assembling. Having them prepped makes the whole process feel like an assembly line — quick and satisfying.

Step 2 — Staple One Flag Between Each Light

Now for the fun part. Take one flag and fold the top edge over the wire between two lights. Slide it until the fabric covers the wire, leaving enough of the folded top exposed to get your stapler in there.

Position your stapler so the staple goes through the folded top of the flag and closes beneath the wire — not through it. This is the step that deserves your full attention.

You do not want to staple into your wiring. Take your time: gently press the stapler close to the wire first, check that it won't catch the wire, and then press it down fully. Do one staple on each side of the flag for a secure hold.

This part of the project is best done by an adult. It requires a little patience and attention, but once you get the hang of it on the first flag, the rest go quickly.

Repeat until you have one flag between every light on your strand.

Step 3 — Lay Out Your String Lights

Before you staple a single flag, lay your string lights out on the floor in the shape you plan to hang them. I laid mine out right inside my front door because I could judge the width of my porch from there.

This step is more important than it sounds. It showed me exactly where my solar panel needed to start — at the front of the porch where it gets full sun — and it helped me map out where my adhesive clips would go.

Think of it as a dry run that saves you from having to reposition everything later.

Step 4 — Hang Your Garland on the Porch

Use your adhesive string light clips to hang the garland in whatever pattern works for your space. On my small covered porch, I draped mine across the ceiling — going left, then right, then left again — for that sweet bunting effect you can see in the photo.

I love how it turned out. Here is a photo at dusk when the lights came on.

One more tip from a Florida girl: if it is summer, hang your garland early in the morning. I waited until the next morning after I made mine, and it made all the difference. Porch decorating in Florida afternoon heat is not for the faint of heart.

Year Round Coastal Americana Decorating with Your Flag Garland

This garland is not just for the 4th of July. It is actually the perfect anchor for a coastal Americana porch look that works all summer long and across every patriotic holiday on the calendar.

This year, I styled mine as part of a Ralph Lauren-inspired coastal Americana porch design — and honestly, all I added to my existing porch was this garland, a hydrangea wreath on the door, and one stick flag in a planter. Three simple additions and the whole porch transformed.

More Ways to Use Your Patriotic String Light Garland

One of the things I love most about this project is how versatile it is. Once you make your garland, you will find all kinds of places to use it.

Patio or back porch — Drape it along the roofline or across a pergola for festive outdoor entertaining all summer long.

Front porch railing — Wrap it along your railing for a classic patriotic look that works beautifully day and night.

Indoors — Drape it across a mantel, along a staircase banister, or in a window for a cozy Americana living room or bedroom moment. It looks especially beautiful in a coastal or farmhouse style space. At the coast — If you have a beach house, lake house, or coastal cottage, this garland is absolutely perfect. It is casual, cheerful, and so fitting for a waterfront space.

Classroom — Teachers, this one is for you. A flag garland strung across a classroom bulletin board or window during the school year is festive, educational, and surprisingly sweet.

Patriotic parties and events — Hang it as a backdrop for a Memorial Day cookout, a 4th of July party, or a Veterans Day gathering. It goes up fast and looks like you spent way more time on it than you did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use battery operated string lights instead of solar? Absolutely. Battery operated outdoor string lights work just as well for this project. Solar is my preference because there are no cords to hide and they come on automatically.

How many flags do I need? It depends on the length of your string lights and how far apart your bulbs are. A good rule of thumb is one flag per bulb.

Will this hold up outdoors? Yes, with a few caveats. The solar string lights I used are designed for outdoor use. The flags themselves are meant for outdoor use.

Can I use this for holidays other than the 4th of July? Absolutely. It is perfect for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, and Presidents' Day. With America celebrating her 250th anniversary this year, it is a beautiful way to show your patriotic pride all summer long. Learn more at america250.org.

How long does this project take? Start to finish, including hanging, is about an hour. The assembly itself, sliding on the flags and stapling, goes quickly once you find your rhythm.

Final Thoughts

This DIY American flag string light garland is the kind of project that looks like it took all day but actually takes less than an hour. It is festive, it is beautiful, and it works on every-sized porch, from a tiny covered stoop to a sprawling back patio.
