Are you tired of looking at outdated linoleum or stained concrete, but the thought of a messy demolition makes you want to close the door and walk away?
As an interior designer, I’m often asked if it’s truly possible to get a high-end look without the high-end price tag—or the sledgehammer.

The good news is that DIY flooring over existing floors is one of the smartest ways to transform your home on a budget.
Whether you are looking to refresh a laundry room or give your entire living space a facelift, you don't always have to rip everything out to get a fresh start.
In this post, I’m sharing my favorite creative ways to cover up your old floors.
From professional-looking stenciled tile to the easiest peel-and-stick solutions, these ideas will help you create a home you love without the stress of a major renovation.
DIY Flooring Projects to Update Existing Floors
You don't need a special talent or trade to change the look of your home's flooring. Our friends have some great, simple DIY flooring ideas you're going to love.
Let's jump in and show you.
Peel and Stick Vinyl Floor Tiles in a Farmhouse Kitchen
The idea of laying tile might terrify you, but that's why we want to show you what Floor Pops. It's a peel and stick vinyl floor tile. No grout or special tools required!
Our friend Ashley, from Fontaine Farmhouse, choose the Altair style of Floor Pops for her farmhouse kitchen and it looks amazing!
Sheila, over at Little Rustic Dream, also went with the Floor Pops peel and stick tile for her kitchen DIY floor project.
She chose the Gothic pattern, and it makes such a lovely statement in her kitchen.
DIY Painted Cork Flooring Transformation
If you'd like a great step by step tutorial on painting cork flooring, Brittany, from White Farmhouse, provides you just that on her Instagram page, and she has a painted floors post on her website too that goes into more detail.
Brittany walks you through priming, paint color selection, type of paint she used and so much more.
The project turned out gorgeous!
Buffalo Check Painted Pattern on Tile Floors
Sherry, at Savvy Apron, writes a post on her blog all about how she painted buffalo on her laundry room floor tiles.
This is an inexpensive solution to creating a new look without having to tear up tile.
Painted and Stenciled Tile Floors in a Laundry Room
Painting tile with a stencil is a great idea! Our friend Liz, over at Within The Grove, did just that, and you can see how beautiful it is!
If you'd like step by step instructions and tips, she lays everything out for you on her blog.
Next, Fariha, from Pennies for a Fortune, walks you through tile stenciling in her laundry room makeover blog post.
Something she does differently is painting her tile black and then the stenciling in white. The ending project is breathtaking!
Stenciled and Painted Tile Floor In Entryway
If you aren't a fan of your current tile color, you don't have to go through the mess of ripping it out. We recently completed a project at my neighbor's house, transforming their outdated floors with only paint and a stencil.

It is surprisingly easy to paint over tile, and the end result looks like an expensive, professional installation.
This is a fantastic budget-friendly way to get a custom, patterned look without the high cost of new tile.
Stenciled and Painted Porch Floors
This outdoor stenciled tile project Ashley did over at Arrows & Bows is gorgeous.
All of the hard work she put into it really paid off!
This technique covers all of the stains and cracks perfectly.
Painted Striped Pattern on Concrete Porch Floors
Lolly Jane shows this inviting porch in their blog post, along with how they painted it.
It requires a little elbow grease to ensure you start with a clean surface, but after that, painting a concrete porch is a breeze.
Painted Gingham Pattern on Concrete Porch Floors
This front porch with a painted gingham pattern on concrete turned out lovely.
Gwyneth, from House Wife Home Show, pulled off a sweet transformation that is welcoming to anyone who steps onto her porch.
Painted Front Porch Steps and Stairs
You might recognize that front door and striking wreath that we featured in our post about farmhouse spring wreath ideas.
This is the home of our friend Kristi, from The Pickled Rose.
She pulled off this brilliant look on her front steps by simply painting the concrete black and adding a couple of white stripes.
Stenciled Brick Pattern on Concrete Patio Floors
Our friend Sarah, at Dreaming of Homemaking, stenciled a brick pattern on her patio.
She was sweet enough to create highlights on her Instagram page to help you recreate the look. If you love it as much as we do, hop over and check out how your patio can look this great!
