Sherwin Williams Off White Colors FAQ's:

What is an Off-White Paint Color?

Off-white paint colors are white with another color added, usually red, blue, or green, giving it a slight beige, gray or greige undertone. This paint color is commonly used on walls because it is easy to pair with patterns, textures, decor styles, and other colors.

Other names for off-white are frosted, tinted, fair, ivory, and pearl. You will surely find it simple and easy to work with, no matter what you call off-white.

But you might be asking what the difference between off-white and white paint is. The easiest way to explain this is by looking at the light reflective value, or LRV, of white and off-white colors.

White colors are in the 100 to 80 range, while off-white is below 80. With a lower light reflectance value, off-white is more subtle, less bright, and casts a slight tinge of color.

Here is more information about what is LRV in paint.

What Paint is Best for Off-White?

There will be many factors that will help you determine which is the best off-white color for your home. Each off-white paint color will have a slightly different appearance if used on the exterior or interior of the home. You will also need to consider the style of your home, how much light the space gets, and the flooring and furniture you're using in the room.

  • Easy to care for: Off-white paint colors are easy to clean and maintain.
  • Can be easily updated if your style changes: Off-white paint colors are a great choice if you're unsure what color you want to use in your home. You can easily update the color of your walls if your style changes in the future.

Now let's look at examples of these off-white colors.

Accessible Beige SW 7036

Accessible beige is the first of our warm whites and is probably the most popular choice for a beige or off-white color sold by Sherwin Williams. With the lowest LRV of 58, this is the darkest off-white, most popular Sherwin Williams paint color.

Accessible beige has gray undertones which makes it a versatile color and an excellent choice for any room. This warmer white has an earthy cozy feeling and looks beautiful next to white/white colors.

SW 7036, with its warmer tones, looks great on interior walls and exterior. Here is an example used by Jenna Sue Design for her bathroom wall color.

Shoji White SW 7042

When I was doing my research, this color was sometimes considered a popular SW color, while others didn't include it. However, I wanted to share this color because my daughter recently used it on her exterior, and it is a beautiful example of an off-white with a creamy undertone.

Shoji white is a warm creamy white that leans towards greige. With a light reflectance value of 74, this off-white reads a nice neutral white color on the exterior, while on the interior, it has more of an off-white, creamy look.

Eider White SW 7014

Here is another off-white that is in the 70s LRV range. Eider White SW 7014 is a light grayish-white paint color by Sherwin Williams. It has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 73, which means it is a fairly light color. It has a slight pink undertone, which can be more noticeable in certain lighting conditions.

Here is a lovely example of Eider white on Steffianglewood kitchen cabinets on Instagram. This off-white color has a lower LRV which looks white by itself but paired with a white/white color, it comes across as a warm white paint color.

Alabaster SW 7008

Sherwin Williams Alabaster is probably one of my favorite white to off-white paint colors by Sherwin Williams, and this is why. Alabaster is a soft, light ivory paint color.

It has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 82, which means it is a very light color. Alabaster is a great option if you want white walls with a bit of warmth. It has a warm, beige undertone, which gives it a slightly creamy appearance.

Here is a great example of using Alabaster in my niece's guest bathroom renovation. This bathroom has only one small window, making it a great candidate for white color.

Because Alabaster is slightly off-white with a high LRV, it was the perfect color for this tiny space. It bounces a lot of light, making the room feel larger, while the warm undertone keeps it from feeling cold.

Snowbound SW 7004

Snowbound SW 7004 is a white paint color by Sherwin-Williams. It is a warm, soft white that can appear grayish in certain lighting conditions.

Snowbound has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 83, reflecting a lot of light back into the room. This makes it a good choice for rooms with a lot of natural light. Snowbound white looks great on trim, as it will help to brighten up any space.

Here is a great example of Snowbound used on the exterior of a house. This beautiful home belongs to my friend Jennifer at GraciousSpaces on Instagram. Because snowbound is more on the white side of off-white, it reads white on the exterior but in a more subtle way.

Some pros to Snowbound is that it is a warm, soft white color that reflects a lot of light. It is a great choice for time and versatile, meaning you can use it in any room. The cons of snowbound are that it appears grayish in certain lighting conditions.

Pure White SW 7005

Sherwin Williams Pure White SW 7005 is a warm, bright white paint color that is perfect for a variety of rooms in your home. It has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 84, reflecting a lot of light back into the room.

Because this brighter white color has a high LRV, it leans more toward white but is still considered off-white. This high reflective white color is a great choice for rooms that do not get a lot of natural light. On the exterior, it will read as white instead of off-white. In fact, it will be a bright white like Snowbound.

What makes Pure White a great selection? It has a warm and bright white appearance, reflects a lot of light, is a good choice for trim color, and is can be used in any room. This color's downside is that it appears yellow in certain light conditions.

How to choose the right off-white paint color for your home

When selecting any paint color, I recommend starting with the popular, most-sold colors. To make that easy for you, I have included those off-white colors. Next, look at the undertones and LRV of each other to determine which off-white is best for your rooms or home.

Consider the size and shape of a room and whether it has natural light. This will help determine if you want a whiter off-white or a darker off-white.

Different design styles of offwhite will work with any style, for example, farmhouse, boho, vintage, transitional, traditional, cottagecore, country, Scandinavian, modern, and more. The perfect choice will be the off-white that speaks to you and your vision of your ideal home.
