SHERWIN WILLIAMS FIRST STAR ON CABINETRY
If you've gone back and forth on painting your cabinetry in gray or white, you're in good company. When we were first selecting a paint color for our kitchen cabinets, we thought we'd go with Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. That felt a little too gray for the look we wanted. With a white backsplash and white countertops, we didn't want too white.
That's the short story of how we got to the perfect solution of Sherwin Williams First Star SW 7646. This white is a slight gray paint color with light blue undertones. We are so happy with how it turned out.
CONCLUSION
We hope that having shared our friend's kitchens with you has helped you see the best Sherwin Williams white for cabinets. White is not just a simple color. There are really no two the same.

what white color for cabinets goes best with Andersen white trim?
Do you mean Alabaster? I am not familiar with Anderson.
I just panted my lower kitchen cabinets in peppercorn. Trying to figure out the color white I should use for my uppers.
Peppercorn is a great color. I would look at Alabaster for the white. It is a nice white that isn’t stark. I hope this helps and good luck!
My honey colored maple upper cabinets are being painted in SW Alabaster in semi-gloss. The walls are SW Alabaster in satin. The backsplash is also a creamy 3×12 crackle ceramic. Countertops are Calacatta Valentin which has grayish and goldish beige thin veining. The bottom cabinets are being painted in SW Attitude Gray which has a greenish tint which brings out the color in the multi color slate floors. What color should I paint the trim doors?
Hi Laura! It sounds like your kitchen is going to be very pretty. I would go with Alabaster for my trim if it was my kitchen. Good luck!
Hello! I plan to paint my kitchen walls Snowbound, would it be a mistake to paint the upper cabinets the same color or should I go with pure white or something else? The lower cabinets will be a dark blue green. Thank you!
If you keep with snowbound for the upper cabinets I think it will look good.
Could you tell me the color of your own kitchen cabinets that you featured in one of you blog posts? You were describing how you chose white but wanted them to be slightly different but still whitish -not grey.(?)
The post disappeared right as I was going to capture the paint name and I can’t seem to find the pathway back! Have been thinking of doing my cabinets this way for our new coastal build . Many thanks!
My kitchen cabinets are color First Star by Sherwin Williams. They are a white/grey color. I have white countertops and didn’t want white-white again so I went with First Star. Here is where I talk about it on the website. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/paint-colors-at-life-on-summerhill/
Hello,
I am planning on waiting my bottom kitchen cabinets SW Deep Sea Dive, and then the top I”m think Alabaster White. However, my question is what shine of paint? Because I don’t want my cabinets to shine but keep reading reviews going back and forth about egg shell, satin, matte, gloss, etc…. I appreciate the advice 🙂
I recently painted my cabinets and used satin from Sherwin Williams. In the kitchen, you need good hard-working paint. Another paint to check into is Behr paints new Dynasty. I am testing it out now. Make sure to shake the can well. It felt thick when I was putting it on the wall over my fireplace.
This wall is sheetrock. But it dried beautifully. Since I do not have long experience with it I want to recommend testing it yourself first especially on the surface you plan to paint on it. Last, I have a post on picking out sheens and it has a video. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/best-paint-sheen/. And I have a post on how to paint cabinets https://lifeonsummerhill.com/how-to-paint-cabinets-without-sanding/. I hope this helps!
@Kathy, Good evening. I am about to paint my lower cabinets at my lakehouse deep sea dive as well. Do you like how yours turned out?
We just painted our walls Sherwin Williams pure white. We also need to paint our kitchen cabinets. Is it ok to paint them the same color? Pure white?
Thanks
Absolutely! You can paint the walls and cabinets the same color.
Hi! We are doing a new construction and I’m thinking of Highly Reflective white for the walls and kitchen cabinets. Is that too much? I want white quartz with a hint of grey. We will have an island. I can do the island the same white, wood instead of paint, or a gray. Looking at maybe Morning Fog SW 6255 or Krypton SW 6247.
Which do you think would look better? Our previous house was oak cabinets with sage walls and I’m just ready for a change.
Your new kitchen sounds very pretty. I have not had personal experience with Highly Reflective white but I can honestly say many people have used it and love it. One of my favorite whites is Alabaster because it has a softer appearance. Look at the paint chips for Alabaster and Highly Reflective white next to each other and you will see the difference. Also, I have a post on how to pick paint colors that might be helpful. It gives tips on making a selection easier. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/how-to-pick-paint-colors/
Last, as far as the island all of your options will be pretty. If you go with a gray color look at Repose Gray too. It is a good medium tone gray color. I have a post with examples of using Repose Gray that might help you see it used on cabinets. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/sherwin-williams-grey-cabinet-colors/. I hope this helps and good luck!
Hello need some help we are painting our island bar smoky blue from sherwin Williams however can’t decide which white color to use on all the upper and lower cabinets? Can you please suggest which color whether it be pure white or snow bound or alablaster?? Love to get a professional opinion on which would be the best color to use? Thank you so much!
Good questions! All of the white colors you mentioned will look great with your island. Pure white and snowbound are whiter than alabaster. But honestly, most people would not notice the difference. Alabaster is a warmer white whereas pure white and snowbound are cooler. If I wanted a white/white I would go with pure white. If I wanted a warmer white I would go with Alabaster. I hope this help! Good luck! Your kitchen sounds like it is going to be beautiful! 🙂
Linda, I found your site on Pinterest. I’m redoing a kitchen and was planning to use Sherwin Williams Alabaster paint but I want to do some brick on the wall and were wondering if you could PLEASE tell me what brick is in the picture of Tiffany’s kitchen at Forever Six Acres. I really like how that brick looks with the Alabaster cabinets.
Hi Carol! Your kitchen idea sounds beautiful! If you have Instagram you can contact Tiffany by DM or here is her website where you might be able to find the information about her kitchen. Good luck! https://foreversixacres.com/
Hi! Thanks so much for this post. I’m building a new home, with a “modern farmhouse” theme. In the kitchen, the cabinets will be white and the island is stained. Do you think Alabaster would be a good color for the white cabinets? If so, what color would you paint the walls around the cabinets? The kitchen is open to the living room, so it would have to be a color I could paint throughout that entire open space (kitchen and living room). I like the “warm” tones of Alabaster – but don’t want them to appear yellow. Should I just stick to “pure white” color for cabinets? But don’t want the cabinets to be too stark white where it takes away the farmhouse feel. Basically wondering what colors to do the cabinets and the kitchen/living room paint! I want them to compliment each other as well. Thanks in advance – I appreciate reading all of your advice!!
Hi Eve! It sounds like your kitchen, and living area will be very pretty! Alabaster is a great white color. I have used it on walls and cabinets in many houses, and it doesn’t read yellow. Regarding the walls for this open space, if you want a greyer color look at agreeable gray and repose gray. If you want a warmer color, look at accessible beige. I hope this help, and good luck!
Do you know the name of the countertops in the first picture with snowbound cabinets and pure white walls? I’m trying to find a white paint color to go with silestone eternal statuario and what I thought worked beautifully when looking at samples is a mess. Any suggestions would be great!
I do not know the color but here is her Instagram where you can DM her. https://www.instagram.com/allbluesand/
I love my white cabinets. We remodeled an old farm house 18 years ago. Took it down to the studs, moved walls, new wiring, plumbing, and heat in the floors. I let my daughter talk me into putting “some color on the walls”. Well, we live in South Central IL. with a LOT of cloudy days during winter. We have lots of windows and big patio doors, but still the house seems dark. I made the decision to start painting every room this spring and we are going with WHITE! I can decorate with color in rugs, bedding, and pillows. I LOVE white. It is fresh and clean, easy for me to keep clean (even with 16 grands in and out). I can decorate for the different seasons by just changing some throws on the sofas and pillows in different rooms. Our door knobs, kitchen hardware and lighting is all black. I have done an entry porch (closed in and I have my canned goods that I canned along one wall in a huge bookcase type cabinet that hubby built and it is black) and am working on bedrooms now. I love the way the white and ship lap in certain areas makes the colors in the rooms pop! Not a dark place to navigate now in the rooms I have done. Even my daughter loves it. 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing! I love to hear everyones stories. I am like you in that I love white. It makes every room feel so bright and clean.
@Linda McDonald, please be honest and give me your opinion. We are doing a new build and thinking about Alabaster on all cabinets and trim, and all walls perhaps Neutral Ground. These are warmer tones. What do you think about that combination? The island could be iron ore or one of the similar colors. Counter tops will be white quarts and backsplash, large, 30” tiles for a broader more space covering tile without grout lines. It looks like white marble with charcoal/black veins. I think we are going to use this same tile on all bathroom floors. I like consistency throughout, but I don’t want it to be boring.
This is a good question. Alabaster is an excellent white for cabinets and the trim and neutral ground are pretty too. Neutral ground has a beige warm undertone, so your interiors will feel cozy. All these whites may feel like too much white while you are building, but once you place furniture, accessories, plants, and such into your home that is where things will start to cozy up and not feel boring. I hope this helps and good luck on building!
I am doing a remodel. I plan on painting cabinets and wood trim in whole house Alabaster I need a wall color for living area that’s not dark as the room doesn’t get much light. Any suggestions? Thanks
Here are a few posts that will give you suggestions for neutral colors that look beautiful with Alabaster. This one is Behr paint. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/best-behr-neutral-paint-colors/ And this one is Sherwin Williams. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/best-sherwin-williams-neutral-colors/.
What color is your backsplash painted?
What finish is used for the cabinets paint? Satin, semigloss?
I have used satin and semigloss on cabinets. Satin is my first choice when painting cabinets.
You didn’t share the wall colors except for the first one. It would really help in deciding which cabinet color. Can you please list them?
Thank you for your comment! This post was focused specifically on cabinet colors, so I didn’t include wall colors for the other examples. To help you decide, though, Sherwin Williams has some great neutral wall colors that pair beautifully with these whites, such as Agreeable Gray or Repose Gray. Is there a specific cabinet color you are considering?
My walls are shoji white and the trim is extra white. Would you paint the kitchen cabinets extra white or high reflective white?
Thank you
That is a very good question. I would do Extra White but I would also consider testing Alabaster. Here is a post on how to pick a paint color. Go down to the section “Tape the Paint Colors to the Wall” to read about my technique for getting the right color. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/how-to-pick-paint-colors/ The whole article is worth reading because I share pro tips and many years of experience in picking the right color. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
