  1. Painting over stained cabinets from1998. Want a bright but warm white and then I’d like a suggestion for a wall color… a slight taupe or .
cream that contrasts the cabinets just enough, but still keeps things neutral.
HELP ! Everything looks wrong when I get it home!

    • It is challenging picking a paint color from a small swatch. Look at Alabaster for a bright warm white. Pick up four of the paint chips so you can tape them together to make a larger sample. Also, make sure to look at your color during the day and place it on something white. If it is touching another color it will take on that color and changes its appearance. I hope this helps and good luck!

  2. For an open floor plan that has sw agreeable gray walls and sw extra white trim, can I get away with painting kitchen cabinets BM White Dove? The countertops are warm and creamy, so I don’t think I can use SW Extra White on them, but don’t want the cabinets to clash either. The other thought is other thought is SW Pure White on the cabinets. Would that be warm enough and a possible good compromise? I really do not want to repaint walls and trim. Thanks!

    • Let me make sure I understand. Walls are agreeable gray and trim extra white and countertops are a warm off white tone. Is that correct? Is this warm white tone look yellowish? If that is the case I would look at pure white if I want my cabinets to be white.

When I decided to paint my cabinets I cleaned and primed one side of a lower cabinet then added the color I was considering. I left it there for a couple of days to see how it changed with different lighting. If you try this it will give you more confidence in the color you choose. Also, I only bought sample paint for testing.

I hope this helps and good luck!

  3. Hello! We are starting new construction with the modern farmhouse feel, very high ceilings & open concept kitchen and living room! Keep questioning whether to go with a white or gray SW cabinets and island color but I want light and airy flow feel for the spaces! Any help… thank you!!

    • If your walls and trim are all white and you are concerned about it being too much white on the cabinets look at Repose Gray, agreeable gray, accessible beige, or divine white. If you think you are good with everything white then I would go for it. Look for interiors on Pinterest that have all-white interiors. This will help you visually see if you like it and can live with it.

  4. We are building a modern farmhouse home and want to have some type of white cabinets and plan to use a swiss coffee for the walls. Haven’t picked counters out yet but am thinking about Stratton Blue BM for the island. Any thoughts? and what color white for cabinets with that color choice

      • Hi, we are changing our cabinet doors with Shaker style cabinets and painting the Kitchen. Our countertop is Luna Pearl which very busy. Our wall is Agreeable Gray. Which is a good color for cabinets?

        • Hi Mital! What color are you leaning towards? Also, does your room get a lot of natural light? If you want a white color look at Alabaster. If you want something darker and your room gets lots of natural light consider a black like iron ore. I hope this helps and good luck!

  5. I’ve got St. Cecilia granite countertops. My trim throughout is BM White (OC-151). I’d like to paint my dated knotty pine cabinets. Any suggestions as to color? My concern about the white trim paint for the cabinets is that it will be too white for the granite. St. Cecilia has more of a creamy off white. My concern about using an off white for the cabinets is that it will not match my trim. There is a lot of white trim in my kitchen! Shouldn’t my white trim and cabinets match??
I’ve also thought about Repose Gray for cabinets?? Wall color? Please advise! Thx

    • These are good questions. One of my clients, I think, has St. Cecilia countertops. We painted her cabinets Chantilly by Benjamin Moore. This is the post if you want to see how it turned out. https://lifeonsummerhill.com/best-white-paint-for-interior-walls/ Also, as far as the white paint color for the cabinets I would match it up with your trim if you are afraid it will bother you. However, I believe unless the trim is touching your cabinets you can go with another white but if you love OC-151 then I would go with it. Last, I want to recommend purchasing a sample size of paint from SW and a piece of foam board. Paint it on the foam board and lean it up against your cabinet. Give it a day or two to see if you like it. I would even move it around the room so it gets different light throughout the day and you can see how it will read from different angles. As far as a wall color repose gray is a possibility. Again buy a sample and paint it on foam board. This will help so much in making a decision. You might even find that you love the repose gray on the cabinets and the white on the walls. I hope this helps and good luck!!

  6. Hello Linda,
I’m having my oak kitchen cabinets painted white. I have verde butterfly granite tops. The hardwood floor coloring throughout the house is acorn brown. The wall color is light pewter, kitchen appliances are black stainless steel. I desperately need help on which color white I should paint the cabinets. I’m thinking “Pure White”. Also, should I paint the island a different color, any suggestions would be very helpful.

    Thank you,
    Donna

  7. Hello,
I have painted my walls pure white and wanted to paint the cabinet white as well. My countertop is black with yellow marking in it. What kind of white do you suggest for cabinets? What about the island?

    • It is hard to make color suggestions without seeing a room. But a safe option is to paint the cabinets the same color as the wall — pure white. Good luck with painting your cabinets.

  8. I do not get much light in my kitchen. All of the whites I have looked at to paint my cabinets take on pink, purple or yellow hues when i place them around the room. When lights are on all samples look white. What color white paint can I use on my cabinets that will not give off to many different hues but not look to stark. My kitchen island is going to be pewter cast and my floors are stone gray. Thanks for your response

    • Hi Paula! That is a very good question. First, let’s talk about your lighting. Do you know if you have a warm or cool light bulbs in your kitchen? That can affect colors as well as other paint colors that are currently painted in the room. If you are wanting a white-white then look at extra white or pure white first by Sherwin Williams. And if you can change your light bulbs to a natural white bulb which is 3600 to 5000k that will help you see more clearly the true color. You can find that information on the back of the light bulb box. I hope this helps and good luck.

  9. Hi! Thank you for the wonderful article. Have you or anyone you know ever used any of the off-white/creamier hues for painting their kitchen cabinets? We have a painter scheduled next month to paint/update our cabinets and he recommended alabaster or snowbound but we really feel like a creamier hue would match our flooring, granite countertops and backsplash tile much better. We don’t like stark white cabinets. But we don’t want it to look strange. We were looking at the cream and sugar color. He’s using the emerald line paint from Sherwin-Williams. Thanks a ton and hope your day is full of joy! 🙂

We want to paint the upper cabinet white and black island . We have good natural light in the area . We hood will be white with some natural wood tone the same with our open shelvings in the bar/coffee area. Wood flooring . Subway tile backsplash and Calcutta classic on our countertop . Please help, I am not sure if I have to choose the same white paint for the cabinet or what would you suggest ? I would really appreciate all the input. More power to you . Thank you so much .

    • Your home sounds very pretty and I love that you are bringing back to life an abandoned farmhouse. If you want a seamless look I would go with the same color white on the cabinets as the walls. To make sure – is this Cloud White a Benjamin Moore color? If so it looks like it is a warm off white. If you want a tiny bit of contract with Cloud White then I would look at a white white like Pure White by Sherwin Williams for the cabinets. I hope this helps! Good luck with your renovation.

  11. Hello, I just finished painting my kitchen with accessible beige walls and alabaster trim. I’ve decided the cabinets now have to be painted too. I wanted to do an off white (without yellow undertones). I have black countertops which color would you think is best for cabinets.

  12. Good Morning… I have painted my kitchen walls with Repose Grey (white trim)and now want my kitchen cabinets painted and kitchen island. My granite is Caledonia with a white subtile
Backsplash with grey grout. Any thoughts on what color cabinets and darker color island?

    Reply
    • Hi Kim! I’ve been thinking about your questions. What came to my mind first were white cabinets in Pure White or Alabaster. Then an island in Peppercorn or a very dark gray color. Another idea is white cabinets, and if your island is solid wood, strip the finish off and bleach the wood. This look is popular right now and might look great on your island. But this also depends on what is going on in the rest of the room. I hope this helps. And good luck!!

  13. Thank you for this great article. My new home has wood cabinets that were poorly stained. I am getting them painted white. Most people have stainless or black appliances, but mine are white and I can’t afford to replace them for a while. What’s the best Sherwin Williams white for white appliances?

    Reply
    • This is a good question. I have white appliances and white cabinets. I actually prefer white appliances and I have new ones coming this year. When I painted my cabinets I choose a slightly gray-white color called First Star. My appliance and my countertop are white so I felt like I needed a little color to my white cabinets.
If you like a warmer tone consider something like alabaster which is a white-white with a warm undertone. Last, colors read differently in each room. I would get some sample cans and test them out on the wall or on a piece of foam board in your room. Hold it up next to your appliances and countertop to see if you like it.
I hope this help and good luck on your painting project.

  15. I want a color(Sherwin-Williams) to paint one wall in living room that goes with pure honey (behr paint). This wall color would extend into the kitchen. I am having the cupboards painted but not sure what color to paint them. My kitchen is a galley style with white appliances. Should I have the upper cupboards painted in a different color then the bottom and if so, what colors?

    Reply
    • These are all good questions. First, I did a search for Pure Honey by Behr and the closest I see is Pale Honey. Did you mean Pale Honey? Second you asked about painting your cabinets in your galley kitchen two colors – one on top and the other on bottom. Whenever I paint cabinets in galley kitchens I generally paint them all one color. Keep things simple and more uniform helps to make the space feel more open. Good luck on your painting projects and let me know about the Behr paint color.
