After polling my Instagram followers, the color orange emerged as the top choice for this years fall color scheme. For weeks, I’ve been immersed in planning our fall decor, scouring Pinterest for inspiration and exploring stores brimming with autumnal treasures.

Dreaming and planning is definitely one of the best parts of decorating!

So, let’s jump into these easy steps and take a room-by-room tour together!

How to Decorate for Fall with Orange and Neutrals

Decorating for fall is a delightful journey that starts with inspiration and ends with a cozy, autumnal retreat. Here’s a simple guide to help you transform your home for the season:

  1. Find Your Fall Inspiration: Start by gathering ideas. Explore Pinterest, visit stores showcasing fall decor (Hobby Lobby is usually the first to display fall decor), and select an inspiration piece such as art or a cozy throw blanket that captures the essence of fall for you.
  2. Gather Your Supplies: Shop your home first—look for home decor items that already carry the warmth of fall colors or neutral tones. Next, pull out your stored fall decor, go thrifting for unique finds, and shop for new pieces that complement your vision. Consider printable art, garlands, and other small touches to enhance your space. Here is a printable art shop on Etsy with lots of fall prints.
  3. Clear the Room: Remove all decor from the space you’re redecorating or areas such as a fireplace mantel. This clean slate allows you to see the room with fresh eyes and sets the stage for your fall transformation.
  4. Layer in the Fall Decor: Begin adding your fall items back into the room. Use layering techniques, incorporate a variety of textures, and play with heights and odd numbers to create visual interest. Embrace seasonal touches like pumpkins, leaves, and other autumnal elements to bring your space to life.

Now, let’s take a room-by-room tour to see these steps come together and how to decorate for fall with orange and neutrals.

Living Room Fall Decor

The living room is often the heart of the home, and it’s the perfect place to start adding those warm fall touches. Check out how we create our fall living room.

Fireplace Fall Decor

Begin with the fireplace, a natural focal point.

An old window serves as the backdrop, layered with a thrifted fall landscape painting reminiscent of Bob Ross’s serene scenes. Adding artwork is one of the easiest ways to bring the season into your home.

On one side, garlands of fall leaves light up the space, sourced from Hobby Lobby. Fall is the perfect time to add a natural element that adds to a warm and cozy feeling.

Add a touch of vintage charm with brass candlestick holders and battery-powered candles, creating a cozy glow. By the way, these are my new favorite battery candles. They are so realistic!

Then a stack of vintage books in autumn colors and fall titles.

To fill in any gaps, incorporate decorative pieces like a white vintage plate with a brown design, a matching teacup, books in autumn colors and gourds from your fall decor stash.

Hang a basket on the mantel shelf, weaving the garland through it to conceal the battery box. A bow made of orange and tan gingham ribbon ties everything together, adding a charming touch.

Don't forget the hearth!

A bushel basket filled with faux mums and pumpkins (Pottery Barn’s faux pumpkins look just like real pumpkins) anchors the look. Tuck in a few faux mum flowers and leaves on top of the pumpkins for an extra pop of color.

I found these faux mums at Homegoods but after doing some research these seem to be the best you can order online.

Last sprinkle fall leaves under the garland as if the garland leaves are falling.

Coffee Table

Keep your coffee table decor simple yet impactful.

A thrifted bench now serves as our coffee table, and a basket tray on top holds a stack of autumn-colored books and a thrifted glass pumpkin filled with fairy lights. I found the fairy lights at Dollar Tree.

Did I mention that I thrift all year long for holiday decor? Keep your items open year around for pieces to use like this glass pumpkin for fall.

Add vintage brass candle holders, adorned with a neutral ribbon, for a touch of elegance. See the new battery candles again? They are amazing!

A few more autumn colored books and another candlestick complete the look, creating a cozy, inviting spot.

End Tables

For the end tables, continue the theme with candles, wheat stalks, and a weather vane.

What is it about a weather vane that has fall written all over it?

Add a ribbon bow of orange and neutral gingham to a candle to tie in with the mantel decor. Repetition of colors and elements brings harmony to the space.

On the other end table a gourd, crock, more candles and this adorable terracotta pumpkin from my how to make a terracotta pumpkin post.

Autumnal TV Console Table

The TV console table is another opportunity for creativity.

A dough bowl filled with hay and small terra cotta pumpkins sets the tone. Where did I get these terra cotta pumpkins? I made them and they are so easy.

Here is a DIY on how to make terra cotta pumpkins for cheap and this is not the baking soda trick.

Last is probably my favorite part and that is selecting TV art that is all about autumn. There is no better way to welcome the fall season than by having autumn art displayed.

If you have a smart tv open up YouTube and search for autumn ambiance. You will find loads of options. Ones with music and others without. Here is one I created with vintage autumn art that you can use.

Autumn Pillows

Pillows and throws are an easy way to update your living room for fall.

Keep neutral throws on display, but swap one out for a textured option in the perfect orange and neutral combination. I love to do this on the back of our sofa.

For the throw pillows, mix existing neutrals with new finds like a sherpa pumpkin pillow.

And this small needlepoint acorn pillow sourced from Michaels. I still cannot believe I paid under $10 for it.

Last, include an accent pillow on your sofa. This needlepoint pumpkins fit the color scheme perfectly.

Fall Throw Blanket Decor

Fold and add a throw to the back of your sofa. If you don't have room for a sofa table and your cushions are detachable then consider adding a blanket with all the right autumn shades on the back. I love the warm combination of cream, orange, and burgundy. You can go for a design, too, such as pumpkins.

When thinking about how to decorate for fall with orange and neutrals, these small changes can make a big impact, adding warmth and coziness to your seating area.

Dining Room Fall Decor

In the dining room, simplicity is key. Focus on creating a centerpiece and adding a few fall touches to the bookcases.

Table Centerpiece

An ironstone pitcher, a thrift store treasure, becomes the star of the dining table. Fill it with autumn-colored berry stems for now, and consider adding more elements to the fall stems as Thanksgiving approaches.

Flank the pitcher with vintage brass candlesticks. Bringing the brass into the next space ties the rooms together.

Bookcase Decor

On the bookcases, display autumn-colored books or turn around those that don’t fit the color scheme.

Keep or add baskets and bowls for their natural, autumnal feel and fill them with fall foliage or white and orange pumpkins like we did.

Add candles like these gorgeous battery-powered pinecone candle from Michaels to complete the look.

And if it fits, include a glass pumpkin cookie jar. Let's entice all the fall senses in this room.

If you have any vintage radios or ones that look antique like this Hearth and Hand radio add it in too. Something about family sitting by the radio long ago has fall written all over.

Last if you love to make holiday decor then add a cute vintage book page garland to your bookcases. This simple DIY is fun to make and the book pages are from Heidi by Johanne Spyri.

In the entryway, keep things simple but charming.

Fall Bench Decor

The entryway bench also gets a seasonal update with pillows in autumn colors, autumn leaf garland and a few faux mums. A fairy lighted autumn leaf garland threads the design into this space, making this small space feel special.

Fall foliage swapped out in the basket and a new autumn oil canvas of pears from Hobby Lobby bring seasonal cheer to the space.

In the kitchen’s sitting room, continue the autumnal theme by bringing items from the other rooms into this space.

In the chairs are new pillow covers from Ikea that pull together the autumn colors from the garland and such. Pillow covers are great because they take up no space in storage.

On the hutch, old but new fall plates with a Currier & Ives look in brown tones.

And faux fall leaves complete the cozy, nostalgic feel of the room.
