Layered Rug Ideas
Before I share some beautiful layered rug ideas I want to give you some tips on shopping for rugs for your layered rug design.
First, you will need at least two rugs to get a layered look. I recommend a standard doormat for the top layer and then a small rug as the bottom layer. I recommend at least three inches around the edge.
However, I have seen larger under layer rugs and they look beautiful too. The main thing is to keep the under rug at least three inches more than the mat.
Okay, so now that you know how to shop for a layered rug let's get started curating some ideas for your front door.

Spring Layered Rug
Now for layered rugs, I have created at my house.
After many years of being an interior designer you might say I have layered a few rugs interior and exterior but my favorite place to bring this design element is on my porch.
I mean layering rugs on yoru porch give it character, depth, a whole new dimension and brings a hint of what decor is inside.
Let's start with this one I created in springtime for spring porch decorating ideas.
This layered rug set is made from a custom bleached drop cloth rug I made. I stenciled the design on it with outdoor acrylic paint. This rug is very durable and I share more in the last layered rug set on how to make and paint your own rug.
This year I decided to add some style to my bottom layer so I made these tassels and added them to a bleached drop cloth. I really like how it turned out but my kitty seems to like the most because he keeps playing with the tassels. LOL!
Here are direction on how to make a rug with tassels.
Christmas Layered Rug
This layered rug set is all homemade. The top layer, I stenciled the writing on a doormat and the bottom layer I chalk painted stripes on a dropcloth.
Patriotic Layered Rugs
I love decorating our porch for holidays and independence day is a favorite. This layered rug ensemble is made of a rug I found on clearance at Target and the same mat like the one for spring.
Conclusion
Well we have come to the end of decorating you with layered rugs. These rug combinations are so inspiring! Here are a few design tips to help you add character and charm to your porch or room.
Designer Tips for Layering Interior Rugs
- Start with a neutral base rug: Choose a neutral rug like a sisal or flat-weave to anchor the space, especially on hardwood floors.
- Layer a smaller rug for style: Add a pop of color or texture with a sheepskin, wool rug, or vintage rug layered under a coffee table and furniture.
- Use a rug pad: Helps prevent slipping, adds comfort, and avoids tripping hazards—especially important in living rooms.
- Try different shapes and materials: Mix a round cowhide with a rectangle low-pile rug for an eye-catching combo.
- Watch your placement: Center rugs under key furniture pieces and consider angling the top rug for a designer look.
- Keep kids and traffic in mind: For high foot traffic areas or homes with kids, use durable, low-pile rugs and secure every layer.
Designer Tips for Layered Porch and Front Door Rugs
- Start with the right rug combo: Use an indoor-outdoor neutral or pattern rug as the base and layer a seasonal or patterned doormat on top.
- Stick to low-pile or flat-weave: They’re easier to clean and lay flatter to reduce tripping hazard risk.
- Use a rug pad made for outdoors: Prevents slipping and allows moisture to dry—perfect for front door areas that are exposed to elements.
- Play with textures and color: Layer doormats with red and cream, black and white, or any pop of color that fits your holiday or porch style.
- Frame the entry: Position rugs so they sit nicely under a door wreath, planter, or front step for a cohesive look.
- Consider durability: Choose doormats and rugs specifically rated for outdoor use. They resist fading and keep their colors vibrant longer.
Layered rug ideas are trending and we hope you love them as much as the rest of the farmhouse community does. There are so many perfect combinations you can put together. We'd love to see what you come up with.
