Ever stepped into a room and felt instantly transported to a serene, cozy haven? That’s the magic of a preteen minimalist boho bedroom. Come join me in designing the room of my nieces dreams.
My niece turned 10 this year and was ready for a big girl room. Before I arrived, I was warned about a hammock over her bed. I thought surely they meant a canopy, but it was a boho-style hammock. After pondering it, I thought if I were 10, this would be so cool!
The hammock is staying, so stay until the end to see it, and my niece had two requests: fairy lights and lots of throw pillows.
She showed me a cozy, comfy boho-style room on Pinterest as an example. Knowing her style and special requests, it was time to create a mood board.
Preteen Minimalist Boho Bedroom
Okay, before we dive into the mood board, let's talk about what is the boho style for those who do not know.
Boho style, short for bohemian, is a relaxed, eclectic look combining soft colors, rich textures, and global influences. It features layered textiles, vintage pieces, and natural elements like plants and macrame.
The aim is to create a cozy, personalized space full of character and artistic flair. Now, let's work on the mood board.
Design Plan Mood Board
We shopped online for items, keeping an eye on different textures, nature art, butterflies, mirrors, macrame and natural materials. She also asked for a desk for homework and crafts, and her mom requested white paint on the walls.
A design plan is a great way to see how all the pieces look together. You don't have to use everything on the board but it is a great place to begin so next we went shopping for the big items and order many online such as the vanity desk and the rug.
Painting the Walls
For her bedroom, we went with Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. This warm undertone white makes a fantastic backdrop for her cozy bohemian style room.
I taught my nieces to roll paint on the wall and brush in the corners. They also learned to remove electrical and switch plates, placing them in ziplock bags for safe storage.
Including preteens when painting and decorating teaches them so many skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Plus they really love helping and will care for their space even more in the future.
Bedroom Furniture
My niece already had this gorgeous dark wood bedroom set, but she needed one more piece and a tall mirror.
Vanity/Desk with Lighted Mirror
We selected a white vanity/desk with a large mirror and LED lights from Amazon. The lights have three settings: cool, warm, and natural light.
This white vanity, though a deal, comes in many pieces. Thankfully, her daddy assembled it. It includes a bench and lots of drawers, perfect for her crafting supplies.
Tall Arch Mirror
A large mirror was needed in her room. To keep with the boho vibe, we selected a tall arch mirror in gold from Walmart. This mirror is marked way down from $169 to $39. Such a deal!
Area Rug
We added a rug from the My Texas House collection at Walmart to this boho bedroom. This floral pattern called Poppy was perfect and adding the rug on an angle under her bed and placing it over her wall-to-wall carpet made the room feel even cozier.
We choose this rug because if there are any spills or if it starts to look dirty it can be easily removed and pressure washed outside. And the cost was another deal!
Textiles: Bedding, Pillows and Throw Blankets
Comforter Set
We chose an off-white soft, fluffy comforter set from Walmart with pillow shams to keep colors of the room warm and cozy. Because my niece is getting older, we included satin pillowcases which are healthier for hair and skin.
Our goal is to keep warm, neutral tones. This would work for any kid's room or guest bedroom and allows you to change out decoration pieces without redecorating the whole room. Now, let's get back to this minimalist boho style.
Pillows and Throw Blankets
Next is a furry throw at the foot of the bed in a beautiful shade of pink from Pottery Barn which matches perfectly with a pink heart throw pillow added a pop of color. Now that we have introduced one of her throw pillows let's talk about them all.
Since she requested lots of pillows, her pillow collection includes a large soft solid pillow, a trellis classic boho pillow with lush texture and tassels, and a white soft chenille pillow with lots of tassels.
This trellis design pillow is so pretty and has that perfect boho look.
Window Curtains
Next, we added linen curtains from Pottery Barn, using a single panel on each side of the windows. A black curtain rod tied in the dark wood furniture.
My niece already had these wood shades so no need for additional drapes for privacy.
We went with taller curtains so we could raise the rod higher and puddle them on the floor for a sweet, feminine look.
Decorative Objects
Boho Style Garland with Fairy Lights
First, we draped a boho style garland over the headboard and filled it with fairy lights from Amazon.
Next, we used command hooks and zip ties to keep the floral greenery garland in place after we weaved the fairy lights into the garland.
My niece plugs it in when she is home but her Dad has a plan to put it on a timer.
Table Lamps
Because my niece wanted a cozy feeling, I knew table lamps and fairy lights would provide the magic.
We chose a wicker lamp from Walmart and a small lamp from Dollar General. Both have warm, soft light bulbs, adding warmth and coziness to this boho theme.
The warm hues from the bulbs make the room feel so cozy.
Nightstand Accessories
Next to the wicker lamp is a wood riser perfect for a few decorations such as a boho colored flower arrangement found at Hobby Lobby and a small bowl for her night time jewelry or hair clips as shown in the photo.
Last is a jar I thrifted with a battery powered tea light from the Dollar Tree.
Candles are a must for this space, but using battery powered candles is much safer, and her parents don't have to worry. (Tip: You can buy batteries for the candles at the Dollar Tree for cheap)
Dresser Accessories
Next, on the dresser is an adorable scalloped wicker tray. Scalloped designs are trending right now, so I couldn't resist this tray, and wicker is a timeless boho element.
In the tray is a Dollar General vase filled with Hobby Lobby feathers (another classic boho element), the adorable lamp and a ribbed glass jar with another battery powered candle in it. This jar candle sits to the side of the wicker tray.
On the other side of the dresser is a name sign my niece wanted to keep and a gold flower object she found at Walmart. Accents on tables make a room feel personal and inviting.
Wall Decor Above the Dresser
On the wall above the dresser is a gallery wall of decor. The wall art we found at Dollar General. We originally planned to frame these Etsy flower market pieces in our shop but when we saw these wildflower pieces of art with butterflies we knew it was exactly what the room needed.
Next to the art is a pink macrame accent wall. While shopping for the mood board, my niece pointed to the macrame and said she liked it. Since macrame is a classic boho element, we decided to include not one but two pieces in the room.
We'll discuss the other one later, but for now, the pink macrame piece adds a nice touch of color to the white wall.
To the left of the macrame piece is a marker board with daily goals. Since she’s 10 going on 16, we thought an organizer piece from Dollar General would be perfect.
Spoiler alert: she loves the marker board!
Vanity Decorations
On the vanity, we added another battery-operated candle in a jar and replicated the flower arrangement from beside her bed.
To be honest, I moved these for the photo, but I plan to keep an eye out for another jar while thrifting and pick up more flowers on our next trip to Hobby Lobby.
We can keep adding little details to this preteen minimalist boho bedroom in the future.
Wall Decor Over the Headboard
Above the bed, we added a rattan mirror from Hobby Lobby and tied a bow to hide the nail holding the mirror. Then, we arranged gold glitter-tipped butterflies from Pottery Barn, placing one on the mirror and having the others appear to be flying away.
Here’s a little story about these butterflies. We initially found them for the mood board but thought they were a bit too pricey. I decided to buy them as my gift for my niece's room. To my surprise, when we went to the Pottery Barn outlet, they were on clearance.
Woohoo! Love it when you get an unexpected deal.
Gallery Wall Over the Bed
On the wall next to the bed is another small gallery display featuring a gold butterfly from Dollar General, an off-white macrame piece from Hobby Lobby, and a feather wreath in a warm, rosy tan color.
The feathers and macrame wall truly bring all the boho vibes.
Boho Baskets
Finally, at the foot of her bed is a boho-style basket where she can store all her pillows and throws at night. Simplicity helps young kids and teens not get overwhelmed. Minimalism is the key. If she has too many belongings, it is hard to stay organized.
Teaching preteens to organize is a lifelong gift. So far, she’s been using this basket every night and making her bed each morning.
We picked up a fabric laundry basket and placed it next to the dresser, slightly hidden, to give her a spot for dirty clothes. It’s another way to help her stay tidy.
Boho Hammock Over Bed
Here is the moment we all have been waiting for. It's time to add the final touch: the hammock to this preteen minimalist boho bedroom.
Her dad installed heavy-duty hooks into the studs next to the window, and we carefully hung the boho-style hammock over her bed, making sure it was level and securely anchored for a cozy and stylish addition to the room.

That wraps up our extreme preteen minimalist boho bedroom. Keeping things simple and having a place for everything equips her for success in an organized and tidy room. She has a place for everything, and it is not overly cluttered, which also helps a young person stay organized.
