DIY Dream Master Bedroom Closet Makeover in One Weekend

Tired of a cluttered master bedroom closet? We transformed ours in one weekend with a budget-friendly DIY makeover using an Allen + Roth closet system from Lowe’s. This project was simple, stylish, and completely changed how we organize our space.

If you need a closet organization overhaul then let's get started!

DIY bedroom closet makeover

Recently, I teamed up with Lowe’s to give my daughter, Savanna and her husband, Jesse, a master bedroom closet makeover. After seeing how simple yet transformative this project was, I couldn’t wait to share the details!

Their current walk-in closet was cluttered and lacked efficient storage. The old wire shelving was ready to go. The dark and dull walls made the closet feel small.

So it was time to give it a much needed overhaul and here is how we did it.

Step-by-Step: DIY Closet Makeover

Measure and Plan

To begin, we measured the closet width and length and ceiling height and searched on Lowe's website for closet design options before heading to the store.

Lowe’s had great options in both white and wood finishes. We chose white for a bright and airy feel and opted for the Allen + Roth one-drawer cabinet system for a custom look without the high cost.

Remove the Old Closet System

Next, we cleared out the closet completely and removed all wire shelves to start fresh.

Upgrade the Ceiling

We have plans to cover all the stomped ceilings in our house with shiplap surface mount ceiling plank, so we decided to go ahead and cover it in the closet. This would allow us to practice covering the ceiling and see if we like it.

Next, we installed crown molding to elevate the design and finish the edges. Now that the ceiling is covered, it is time to give this closet a fresh coat of paint.

Paint the Closet

To keep the closet light and airy but gives the walls a little color we decided to paint the walls, ceiling and trim an off white color call Classic Light Buff by Sherwin Williams.

This color is an almost exact match with Behr Swiss Coffee and make the space feel larger and brighter.

Assemble the Closet System

The closet is ready for the fun part, and that is assembling the closet system, so we put together the Allen + Roth one-drawer cabinet system. It was surprisingly easy to assemble!

Install the Closet System

Next, we placed the cabinets in the center of the wall so we would have space on each side for clothes. Then, we realized we wanted to maximize storage on top, so we cut the legs.

To make the closet sit flush with the wall, we used a cordless oscillating multi-tool to cut the baseboard and then a pry bar to pull it away from the wall.

Talk about easy!

Next, we secured the unit to the wall for stability and added the drawer. Then, we installed shelves on top, spanning from the walls to the cabinets.

Next, we added rods for hanging clothes, maximizing storage.

This closet is becoming a reality, and I still cannot believe the weekend is not over.

Organizing & Styling the Closet

Now that everything is complete, it is time to add our clothes back. To keep things nice, organized, and tidy, I placed dresses on the right side of the cabinet.

Then shirts and pants on the other side.

Another pro tip is to use all the same hangers. This truly gives a unified look and makes your closet look high-end.

Next, we added baskets to the shelves for more clothes. This helped create a clean and neat look by hiding the clothes like sweaters, sweatshirts, and jeans, and we added socks to the drawer.

The great thing about this closet organization system is how customizable it is. You can use the space for whatever you need, be it folded clothes, shoe racks, boots, pull outs, bins for smaller accessories like ties or a jewelry box.

Adding the Details

Last, we installed a retro style accordion hook on the back wall for robes, belts, and accessories.

And a cute fairy light above the cabinet for a touch of charm—because organizing should be fun and stylish!
