Shower Curtain Patterns

The second thing to consider is the type of pattern you want on your shower curtain. There are so many fun options out there! Most of the time, I like to keep it simple with solid colors or soft textures—unless I want the shower curtain to be the star of the room.

If you want your curtain to really stand out and add some personality, here are some great patterns and designs to look for:

  1. Toile – classic and vintage with detailed scenic prints
  2. Stripe – simple, clean lines (can be bold or subtle)
  3. Tapestry – rich and intricate, often with a woven or historic look
  4. Monogram – personalized with initials or letters
  5. Buffalo Check – large checkered pattern, perfect for farmhouse style
  6. Gingham – small, classic checks with a cozy cottage feel
  7. Floral – soft and feminine or bold and tropical, depending on the design
  8. Damask – elegant and ornamental, often symmetrical
  9. Plaid – a bit more traditional, with overlapping lines and colors
  10. Jacobean – vintage floral with a touch of drama and detail
  11. Ticking Stripe – skinny stripes with a vintage/farmhouse vibe
  12. Geometric – modern and clean with repeating shapes or angles
  13. Medallion – round, ornate patterns with a boho feel
  14. Botanical – leafy or plant-inspired, often earthy and calming
  15. Animal Print – bold patterns like leopard, zebra, or cow
  16. Coastal/Nautical – anchors, seashells, or subtle ocean motifs
  17. Abstract – artsy and unique, like brush strokes or watercolor
  18. Vintage Poster or Typography – inspired by old ads, maps, or sayings
  19. Solid with Texture – no print but uses fabric texture like waffle weave or linen

Choosing the Best Liner

I always buy a fabric liner and never a plastic one because a fabric liner can easily be washed in the washer and hung back up, whereas plastic is more bulky and challenging to wash.

Additionally, fabric liners are more high-end looking, and not using plastic also helps minimize plastic in your house.

Where do I purchase fabric shower liners? I always look at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Homegoods because they offer better quality at a cheaper price.

Best Fabric for Shower Curtains

When selecting the right fabric for your cloth shower curtain, several options are available to consider.

Cotton shower curtains offer a soft, natural texture that feels luxurious and high-end. They're also a breeze to clean, as they can typically be thrown in the washing machine.

My best advice after washing is to hang it back up to dry. 100% cotton can shrink, so wash it on cold and hang it dry.

On the other hand, polyester curtains are often more water-resistant, making them a practical choice for those who prefer low-maintenance options.

If you're a fan of natural textures, linen shower curtains can add an elegant touch to your bathroom with their unique, airy feel.

In my master bathroom, I opted for a functional cotton shower curtain and added curtain panels on the sides that extend to the ceiling. This one designer tip can elevate your bathroom design.

You can see it in this photo, but if you watch my YouTube video here or Instagram video, I show you how I got this look in more detail.

Don't forget to consider how the fabric will perform in a wet environment. Consider investing in waterproof or water-resistant options to keep your bathroom dry and your curtain looking its best.

Creative Curtain Ideas

Layering your shower curtain can bring your bathroom a unique and sophisticated look.

Layered Shower Curtain

The most common and popular approach is to use two curtains—one functional inner liner and one decorative outer curtain. This allows you to blend practicality with style seamlessly.

Adding a sheer curtain as the outer layer can introduce a delicate, airy feel that makes the space look larger and more elegant. This can be especially helpful in a small bathroom.

Decorative edges, like scallops or intricate trims, can further enhance this layered look, adding a touch of personality and flair like this scalloped curtain from Anthropologie.

Extra Long Shower Curtains

If your bathroom has low ceilings, consider using extra-long curtain shower curtains to give the illusion of height. This not only makes the room appear taller but also adds a luxurious, custom feel.

In my master bathroom, I collaborated with an online company to create curtains for the sides, an extra-long shower curtain behind them, and a liner layered behind the long shower curtain.

To achieve this look, I had them cut the width in half so each side wouldn’t be too bulky. Then, in the middle, I bought an extra-long shower curtain.

Curtain Panels with Shower Curtain

I had a local seamstress create the side panels in my other bathroom to coordinate with my valance. Then, in the middle, I bought a nice white shower curtain and had my daughter's monogram put on it.

For the outer, decorative curtain, I used a pretty wood curtain rod with side-mount brackets by House Parts. For the actual shower curtain that gets used every day, I stuck with a basic shower rod in a matching color and dressed it up with nice rings.

Don't be afraid to mix textures and patterns. Pairing a solid-colored inner liner with a patterned outer curtain can create visual interest and depth. Experiment with different combinations to find the look that best suits your style.

Colors and Patterns to Make a Statement

Choosing the right colors and patterns for your shower curtain can significantly impact the overall vibe of your bathroom.

In smaller bathrooms, white shower curtains or soft pastels can help create a more open and airy feel.

If you're feeling adventurous, bold prints like geometric patterns or vibrant florals can bring a lively pop to your space.

Conversely, subtle designs, such as tone-on-tone patterns or a simple striped shower curtain, can add a touch of elegance without overwhelming the room.

For a dynamic look, consider mixing and matching patterns within a similar color palette to keep things interesting.

If you enjoy updating your decor seasonally, opt for a curtain that allows you to switch out with the change of seasons—think warm neutrals and rich hues for fall and winter, and bright, cheerful tones for spring and summer.

Where to Find Unique Shower Curtains

Thrift stores and vintage shops can be gold mines for unique shower curtains that add character and charm to your bathroom. You never know what hidden gems you might uncover that perfectly match your style.

For those who appreciate handcrafted items, Etsy and other small-batch makers offer a wide array of custom options. These sellers often create one-of-a-kind pieces, allowing you to support independent artisans while finding something truly special for your space.

Another creative option is repurposing drapes or tablecloths into shower curtains. With a bit of DIY spirit, you can turn these items into custom curtains that perfectly complement your bathroom’s aesthetic.

This approach not only adds a personal touch but also provides you with the flexibility to choose from a wider range of fabrics and patterns than what is typically available in standard shower curtains.

So, whether you’re hunting through second-hand shops or browsing online marketplaces, you'll find plenty of opportunities to find a shower curtain that’s as unique as you are.

Accessorizing with Your Shower Curtain

Accessorizing around your shower curtain can make a huge difference in your bathroom's overall look and feel.

Start by matching your shower curtain with bath mats, towels, and even wall art. This helps create a cohesive theme that ties the room together.

Adding coordinating storage solutions, such as baskets or shelves in complementary colors, can keep your bathroom organized while enhancing its style.

small bathroom accessories

Don't underestimate the impact of the small details. Selecting the right hooks, rings, and rods can enhance the appearance of your shower curtain setup.

Opt for hooks and rings that complement the curtain's design, whether sleek and modern or vintage and ornate like these Utopia Bedding Double Glide Roller Shower Curtain Hooks.

I have these hooks, and because my layered curtains sit by themselves on each side, removing and washing the liner is so much easier.

Curtain rods also come in a variety of finishes, such as chrome, bronze, and brushed nickel, allowing you to select a curtain rod that matches your other bathroom fixtures.

For those with an eye for detail, consider using decorative hooks or rings with embellishments to add a touch of elegance. These can add an extra layer of sophistication to your bathroom decor.

If you prefer a more streamlined look, simple, elegant hooks can achieve a minimalist aesthetic, such as these Better Homes & Gardens U-Shape Rustproof Double Shower Hooks.

You can also incorporate plants or decorative items on shelves to add a touch of greenery and personality. A small potted plant or a decorative tray can break up the monotony and add visual interest.

If your bathroom has a window, a coordinating window treatment can bring everything together.

Lastly, think about the functional elements that can be both practical and stylish. A stylish soap dispenser, a chic toothbrush holder, or a matching trash can all contribute to a harmonious and well-put-together space.

These thoughtful touches can make your bathroom feel like a well-designed sanctuary.

Maintaining a Clean and Fresh Shower Curtain

Keeping your shower curtain clean and fresh is easier than you might think!

First, let's talk about fabric liners. They're a fantastic choice because they can be easily thrown in the washing machine—no more struggling with bulky plastic liners.

Aim to wash your fabric liner at least once a month or as needed. A simple wash with warm water and mild detergent usually does the trick. For an extra boost, add a cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle to help combat mildew and soap scum.

If vinegar doesn't do the trick, and you have a white liner, rewash it and add bleach. It is amazing how clean and white your liner will turn out.

Ventilation is key to preventing mold and mildew buildup. Make sure your bathroom is well-ventilated by keeping a window open or using an exhaust fan during and after showers.

If the outer curtain is made of fabric, it can also be washed periodically to keep it looking its best. Just follow the care instructions on the label.

For daily maintenance, simply pulling the curtain closed after each shower helps it dry more quickly, reducing the likelihood of mold and mildew growth.

A little routine care goes a long way in keeping your bathroom fresh and inviting.

Final Thoughts on Shower Curtain Ideas to Transform Your Bathroom

Transforming your bathroom can be as simple as picking the right shower curtain.

From trendy styles like modern minimalism and boho vibes to luxe glam and nautical themes, there's a curtain out there to match every taste.

Opt for quality fabrics like cotton or linen for durability and a touch of elegance. Layering your curtains and accessorizing with matching bath mats, towels, and storage can add an extra layer of sophistication.

Remember, keeping your curtains clean and fresh will help maintain their beauty and longevity. With these shower curtain ideas, your bathroom can quickly become a stylish and inviting retreat.
