How to Create a Guest Bedroom Retreat Your Guests Will Love

There’s something magical about a space that invites you to slow down, take a deep breath, and feel completely at ease. That’s the heart behind this guest bedroom retreat, a room designed not just for sleeping, but for exhaling.

Whether you’re welcoming loved ones or creating a weekend getaway for yourself, a well-designed guest room can become a cozy retreat that wraps every visitor in comfort.

As a designer and homemaker with over 25 years of experience, I’ve always believed that hospitality starts with the details.

I’ve styled countless spaces, but there’s something extra special about designing a guest room that offers luxury, charm, and warmth all in one. When the time came to refresh this bedroom, I wanted it to feel like a soft hug—simple, cozy, and unforgettable.

This project was inspired by my own experience as both the host and the guest. I often use this room myself, so I approached it with practicality and intention. From the mattress to the throw pillows, every element was chosen with comfort and ambiance in mind.

Guest Bedroom Retreat Essentials

Here’s how I transformed our guest bedroom into a welcoming retreat:

1. A Comfortable Bed is Key

The transformation started with replacing the mattress. I took the Helix Sleep Quiz, which paired me with the Midnight mattress, and it has been a dream! After a week of restful sleep, I can confidently say it was the right choice.

Next came the bedding. Soft sheets are non-negotiable for a true cozy retreat. I recommend a breathable fabric like bamboo or high thread count cotton.

Satin or silk pillowcases add that touch of luxury, and I kept the throw pillows minimal just a euro sham and one off-white pillow, so there’s no storage stress.

Freshly washed sheets are essential, especially for guests. If you want to go the extra mile, line-dry them outside. Sunshine and fresh air give them that cloudlike softness.

I topped the bed with a lightweight off-white bedspread (perfect for Florida summers), and in winter, I layer a lightweight comforter underneath.

At the foot of the bed, I added a soft blue throw for color and extra warmth.

2. Decorative Peg Rail

I added a peg rail for both decorative and functional purposes.

I decorated it with a thrifted Longaberger basket filled with airy white flowers and a straw hat where I tied a bow with a long flowy ribbon, giving a nod to Anne of Green Gables.

When guests arrive, I clear the hooks so they can hang bags, towels, or clothing.

3. Nightstands and Seating

On one side of the bed, a desk doubles as a nightstand, paired with a vintage Windsor chair I rescued from the roadside and restored with milk paint.

On the other side, I used a small round nightstand perfect for smaller spaces. It’s open underneath, offering room for suitcases or baskets.

4. Lighting with Personality

To save space, I skipped traditional table lamps and opted for a basket pendant light I made myself years ago, but recently changed the basket. It adds ambiance and frees up the nightstand.

5. Soft Rug Underfoot

If your room has hardwood floors, add a rug. Mine is 6×9, a size that allows the bed to sit at the foot without overwhelming the space. The rug is large enough for feet to land on softly each morning.

Add a thick fabric rug pad underneath for luxury and comfort. Designers often avoid plastic pads, as they can damage floors and don't add extra cushion to one's feet.

6. Reading Material

Every retreat needs a few good reads. I chose James Herriot’s delightful tales, Anne of Green Gables, a Jane Austen classic, a decor book, and a journal.

Choose a mix of flip-through and cozy-up kind of reads depending on your guests.

7. Water at the Ready

I added a carafe that came with a chalkboard tag and my favorite French La Rochere Napoleon bee glass on the desk, perfect for early morning medicine or a midnight sip.

To add to the fun, I wrote, “Welcome to your retreat” on the chalkboard. It's the small details that make a space feel extra special.

8. Easy Access Charging

Modern convenience is key. I recommend updating your outlets to include USB ports or adding a magnetic charging dock. If the outlet is hard to get to run a surge protector like this one that has USB ports. There is nothing worse than having to move a bed to get to the outlets.

Keep it easy to find and near the bed.

9. The Welcome Basket

At the foot of the bed, I placed a fabric-lined basket filled with guest essentials, towels, a hand towel, washcloths, protein bars, and a small travel lotion. These thoughtful amenities show you’ve prepared just for them.

10. Plants and Florals

To bring a bit of nature indoors, I added a faux lavender plant resting atop the tray of books. (If you have a green thumb, add real plants because they are a natural air purifier.)

And over the window shutter, a lamb’s ear wreath adds charm and texture.

These little plant-inspired touches create a sense of serenity and freshness in the room.

11. Scents

In this guest bedroom retreat, I added a new diffuser and placed it next to the cutest butter pat dish I found while thrifting in my hometown. I topped the dish with two essential oils, vanilla and lavender.

The result is a soft, calming aroma that greets guests the moment they walk in. Not only does it smell wonderful, but lavender is known to aid with relaxation and sleep.

Consider adding a diffuser and a few of your favorite oils to elevate the ambiance and create a restful environment.

12. Window Coverings

Light control is essential for both comfort and quality sleep. I recommend using window covers that block out light, like blackout curtains or plantation shutters.

These options not only help keep out morning sun but also insulate the room from heat and cold. While there are many other stylish choices, these are my favorites for function and charm.

Extra Designer Tips for a Cozy Guest Room Feel

  • Stick to a neutral color palette to keep the room calm and serene.
  • Paint the bedroom in a tranquil color: my room is painted Ultra Pure White by Behr
  • Choose fabric textures that layer comfort: linen, cotton, waffle weave.
  • If space allows, a bench or trunk at the foot of the bed offers extra storage and a place to put suitcases. Folding suitcase stands are great too!
  • Make sure there’s room in the closet and empty hangers.
  • Keep toiletries stocked in the bathroom.

Final Thoughts

These eleven ideas helped turn a simple space into a cozy retreat that’s both practical and dreamy. Whether you’re hosting family or just giving yourself a quiet corner to recharge, adding personal touches and thoughtful amenities makes all the difference.
