Traditional Thanksgiving Table Runner Ideas

1. Classic Patterns and Colors
Traditional Thanksgiving table runners often feature traditional Thanksgiving colors and patterns that instantly evoke the holiday spirit. Think of warm and inviting hues like deep reds, rustic oranges, and earthy browns for Thanksgiving or another way to put it think of fall colors.
Traditional table runner patterns such as plaid, damask, or intricate leaf motifs are time-honored choices that add of autumn to your decor.
2. Incorporating Autumn Leaves
What says Thankgiving like fallen leaves?
A wonderful way to bring the Thanksgiving spirit to your table is with a fall leave garland running down the center or you can lay leaves flat covering each other slightly to create a table runner. It's the perfect touch for a fall table runner and looks amazing with the plaid tablecloth.
Here is an example where I made leaves from paper using a printable and step by step direction on how to make this paper leaf garland. It's perfect for anytime during the fall season and makes an easy Thanksgiving centerpiece.
3. Burlap and Gingham Table Runners
For those looking to embrace a farmhouse or rustic vibe, burlap and gingham table runners are go-to options. If you don't have a specific table runner but own a burlap or gingham tablecloth, it can easily be folded to serve as a makeshift runner. The neutral colors of these materials complement Thanksgiving's warm and earth tones.
I wish I could say I have an example of folding a tablecloth to make a runner but I do have a great example using my neutral tablecloth in this Friendsgiving table setting to give you an idea of using gingham check on your table.
4. Woodland Charm with Wooden Table Runners
To infuse a touch of natural elegance into your Thanksgiving table, consider using wooden table runners. If you're feeling creative, a homemade piece of wood painted in white chalk paint and distressed is a great idea for a stunning runner. It not only elevates your centerpiece but also works exceptionally well when layered on another runner or tablecloth.
One Thanksgiving I decided to let the beautiful wood tones of my table act as the backdrop for my Thanksgiving feast. But to elevate the centerpiece I added a fabric runner with a wooden runner on top. It really made the floral centerpiece stand out.
I made this wood runner years ago and have found it to be an important element to my table decorations for all holidays. It makes for an easy table runner to showcase holiday decorations. Here is my Thanksgiving table decorations DIY post if you would like to check out this table more.
5. Farmhouse & Cottagecore Style: Plaid and Checkered Options
Plaid and checkered patterns are quintessential choices for a farmhouse-style and Cottagecore Thanksgiving. Even if you don't have a dedicated table runner, remember a gingham tablecloth can be folded to serve as a runner, adding a rustic, welcoming atmosphere to your table.

Look closely at how I used leaves and berries to make a table runner under the centerpiece on this Thanksgiving table for a small gathering.
To make this runner out of leaves I simply created the centerpiece first in the middle of the table and then using stems threaded them one by one until I created a runner of leaves and berries.
This photo is also a great example of layering two runner where the centerpiece leave and berry runner acts as a table runner in one direction and the fabric runner in the opposite direction. This was the perfect complement to the gorgeous place settings.
You can see how we set up this table in this blog post: Thanksgiving Outdoor Decorations for a Small Patio Table Setting and in my YouTube video.
