How to Measure for Curtains and Blinds

When measuring for curtains and blinds, start by subscribing to my newsletter for a free printable guide. You’ll get a link to my printable library where you can find a handy window treatment measuring sheet.

Print the pages with spaces for writing in all the measurements you need to shop for custom or ready-made curtains and blinds.

Here is a step by step of how to measure for window treatments but these same directions are on the printable too.

  • Gather Your Tools
  • – Sturdy measuring tape with fraction like this one.
  • Pencil
  • – Printable measuring guide
  • Decide on Curtain Placement
  • – Determine if you want the curtains to hang inside the window frame or outside on the wall.
  • Measure the Width
  • Inside Mount: Measure the width of the window frame (inside window) from side to side at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement including fractions
  • Outside Mount: Measure the width you want the curtains to cover, typically extending 4-12 inches beyond the window frame on each side for full coverage.
  • Measure the Height
  • Inside Mount: Measure from the top of the inside frame to the bottom, ensuring accuracy.
  • Outside Mount: Measure from the desired height above the window (usually 4-12″ inches above the frame) to the desired curtain length (just below the sill, at the floor, or somewhere in between. The higher the drapes hang the taller the room will feel).
  • Record Measurements
  • – Write down all measurements on your paper or printable guide.
  • Double-Check Measurements
  • – Re-measure to ensure accuracy and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Consider Additional Length
  • – For a more dramatic look, consider adding 6 inches or more to the length for puddling on the floor or all the way to the ceiling to make the room feel taller and the drapes more dramatic.
  • Choose Your Curtains
  • – With your accurate measurements, you can now shop for the perfect custom, I recommend Deconovo or ready-made curtains that fit your window beautifully. Use my code LINDA15 at Deconovo for 15% off.
  • Designer Tips: Write down all the measurements on the printable, even if you think you’ll only need a few. Trust me, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve only measured specific things, only to realize later that I needed more measurements!

Now you have all your measurements along with other designer tips and tricks on the printable to help you purchase the perfect window treatments!
