You already know what fall is supposed to look like. Orange pumpkins, brown leaves, maybe a little red thrown in for good measure. But what if your heart has been quietly whispering something else all along?
These fall home decor color schemes will show you that autumn is far more beautiful and far more personal than the season ever gets credit for.
Fall Home Decor Color Schemes — There Are No Rules
Here is something I have believed for a long time as an interior designer. The best color scheme for your home is the one that makes you feel good when you walk in the room. That is true in every season, but it matters most in the fall.
The days get shorter. The light gets softer. And the way your home feels at four o'clock in the afternoon starts to matter a whole lot more.
That is why I want to give you permission right now to set aside the orange-and-brown formula and try something that actually speaks to you. Fall home decor color schemes are not one-size-fits-all, and your home does not have to look like everyone else's front porch.

What I've Learned After Years of Changing My Fall Color Scheme
I have tried just about every fall color palette you can imagine — rust, orange, white, pink, blue. And the biggest lesson? Select a color that works with what you already have in the room, and that makes you happy.
After all that experimenting, orange has been my most fun palette, and whites and tans are my favorites. But this year, I am seriously thinking about bringing my light blue and tan tablescape indoors. Stay tuned.
5 Fall Home Decor Color Schemes to Try This Season
Here are five of my favorite fall home decor color schemes that I have created over the years.
1. Blue and Tan — The French Country Fall
If you love color but want something that feels soft and airy, this is your scheme. Light blue paired with warm tan and natural wheat is one of the most charming fall combinations I have ever put together, and it is far easier to pull off than you might think.
I originally created this look as an outdoor tablescape, but every element of it translates beautifully indoors. A light blue throw as a table runner, white dishes, and a tall white milk pitcher filled with wheat stalks — that is really all you need to set the scene.

Blue also behaves like a neutral in fall decorating, which means it plays nicely with just about everything you already own. If your everyday dishes are white, you are already halfway there.

2. White and Neutral — Let the Season Speak Quietly
There is a reason this color scheme never goes out of style. White and neutral fall decor has a quiet elegance that feels cozy without trying too hard. It is the color palette that works in every home, with every style.
The key to making white and neutral feel like fall, not just your regular, everyday decor, is texture. Cotton stems, woven baskets, soft linen, and candlelight are what give this palette its warmth.

This was one of my first fall mantels shared on the blog. It was simple, easy to create, and very minimalist.
See exactly how I styled this mantel in my DIY Fall Mantle post.
3. Wheat and Warm Tan — Let Nature Do the Work
This is the color scheme for the person who wants fall decor that feels effortless and natural. Instead of chasing down autumn leaves and orange pumpkins, you build your entire look around one simple element — wheat.
Wheat is warm, golden, and unmistakably seasonal. It works in a pitcher on your front porch, in a wreath on your door, or gathered in a basket on your entry table. And because its color palette is essentially warm tan and cream, it pairs with absolutely everything.

My front porch is a great example of this in action. The wheat wreath on the door, the white mums, the white bench — the whole porch is built around that single natural element. It is one of the simplest porches I have ever put together and one of my favorites.

You can make your own wheat wreath for just a few dollars. It is one of those projects that look far more expensive than they are.

4. Pink and Orange — The Happiest Fall Palette
I know what you are thinking. Pink? For fall? Just hear me out.
Pink has been one of the most surprising and joyful color schemes I have ever used for autumn decorating. There is something about a soft, happy pink during those first shorter days of fall that just makes a room feel like a celebration instead of a season change.
The trick is to pair it with small pops of orange. That pairing is what makes it read as fall rather than spring. Think soft peonies alongside tiny orange pumpkins — the combination is bright and charming and unlike anything you will see in a big box store.

My bicycle wheel wreath is a perfect example of this palette in action. The base is a thrifted bicycle wheel, and the flowers came from the Dollar Store.
What made it feel like fall was simply adding a handful of small orange pumpkins into the mix. That is it. The result was the brightest, happiest autumn door I have ever had.
My next example of using pink is a happy table centerpiece.

During a hurricane here in Florida, I grabbed a basketful of mini pumpkins and painted them in pastel colors — pink, white, soft blue. They ended up on my dining table in a wooden tray with glass-bottle candleholders and a little raffia, and that centerpiece became one of my most-pinned fall photos ever.
Sometimes the best decorating happens when you are stuck at home with a paintbrush and a good attitude.

5. Rust – Classic Fall Palette
If you want to stay closer to traditional fall colors but still feel like you have done something intentional and beautiful, rust is your answer. Rust reads completely differently than orange. It is quieter, warmer, and… rustic.
Think rust-colored autumn leaves, amber glass jars, warm plaid fabrics, and vintage pieces in aged wood tones. This color palette feels deeply rooted in the season.

For a while, this was my go-to fall palette at Summerhill. I loved the way rust-colored leaves looked in amber jars, and the way a plaid throw on the sofa pulled the whole room together. It was sophisticated and classy!

This next rust color example takes things up a notch. Add copper to the mix, and suddenly your fall decor has richness and depth that feel like something out of early American history — in the best possible way.

Copper mugs, brass candlesticks, oil lamps, and paper leaves on a plaid table covering. That is the combination that inspired this look, and it was one of the most warmly received tablescapes I have ever shared.
Copper brings that warm rusty feeling into a space without requiring a single orange element. It is earthy, it is rich, and it photographs beautifully. Haha!

How to Pick the Right Fall Color Scheme for Your Home
With so many beautiful options, how do you choose? Here are a few simple guidelines from someone who has tried so many.
Start with what you already have. Look at your wall color and your main furniture pieces. Those are your anchors. Your fall color scheme should complement them, not fight them.
Then think about how you want to feel. Do you want cozy and calm? Go with white, neutral, or wheat. Do you want cheerful and energized? Try pink and orange or bright blue. Do you want classic and grounded? Rust and copper are waiting for you.
Finally, do not be afraid to try something completely different from last year. The whole joy of seasonal decorating is that nothing is permanent. If you hate it, it comes down for the next season. But you might just discover your new favorite fall, and that is worth every pumpkin you rearrange or paint to get there.
More Fall Color Scheme Inspiration
Sometimes the best inspiration comes from seeing how other creative people interpret the season. Here are some of my favorite fall color scheme ideas from friends I have admired over the years.

Rose Color Scheme Themed Fall Tiered Tray
We're starting off with Pam's stunning tiered tray. She is our sweet Instagram friend from over at Pammy & Poppy.
This is a jump out of the normal fall color scheme, and we are in love. The rose colored pumpkins accented by rose and pink flowers and amber and clear vases are the perfect fall pairing.
Buffalo Check & Neutrals Themed Tiered Tray
Missy, over at The Welder's Wife XO, decorated this tiered tray and filled it with neutral and buffalo check pumpkins. This fall tiered tray leaves you with warm fall feelings.
Eucalyptus Filled Tiered Tray
This is a rustic eucalyptus-filled fall tiered tray by Velveteen & Grace GA. The color scheme in this sticks closer to traditional fall colors, but the addition of whites and greens gives this look a new feel.
Mixing textures like woods, ceramics, and glass creates a lovely farmhouse tray.
Autumn Rae Dunn Tiered Tray

Michelle, from Family, Shiplap & Dunn, has great autumn Rae Dunn pieces on her tray with accents of traditional fall colors. Each tier fills you with a different memory of fall.
If you want to be inspired by more fall tiered trays, we featured more friends in a round up called Show Stopping Tiered Trays For Your Fall Decor.
Pumpkin Filled Staircase
When looking through our Instagram friends' for gorgeous fall home decor posts, we just had to share Caroline's. Her staircase filled with white and cream pumpkins is adorable.
She thinks out of the box when she decorates, and things always turn out astonishing. Go check her out at C.B. Designs.
Faux Fireplace Mantel Full of Fall Decor
Carey, over at Carey's Country Garden, has a gorgeous shabby faux fireplace. She has decorated for fall with a grapevine wreath, pumpkin topped candle holders, and a vintage pumpkin sign.
She has incorporated traditional fall colors and surrounded them with pastel greens and whites, which lightens the decor.
Farmhouse Fall Filled Nook
This cozy farmhouse fall filled nook is ready for the season. The shiplap fall sign, locally grown burlap pumpkin bag, and wooden pumpkin garland are just what this time of year is all about. Isn't this fall home decor by Melissa over at Honeybee Philosophy great!
Subtle Golden Fall Hues
The golden fall hues jump out of The Finley Farmhouse living room in the most perfect way. Stepping away from the pumpkin orange, this color scheme is dreamy.
Have the leaves started changing outside at your home yet, like they are in the vase on Andrea's table? We're still melting in 90 degree weather down here in Florida.
A White Fall Color Scheme
Do you already have a hutch full of beautiful dishes like Emily, over at Handmade Farmhouse? It's lovely how she nestled white pumpkins in with her white dishware. You don't have to change your color scheme just to change the seasonal decor.
Touches of Teal in Fall
Brooke, over on B. Home Decor, has decorated her kitchen with neutrals, but she adds in pops of teal pumpkins. This is an unexpected color, but it adds beauty and perfectly pulls in her everyday pieces.
Pillows & Pumpkins
When you're looking for the right fall home decor, pillows need to be at the top of your list. Being cozy and cuddling is what fall is for. Ali, at Cav Cottage, has this table ready with pillows and lots of pumpkins.
Adding black and white with buffalo check and polka dots matches perfectly with the traditional pumpkin orange. Ali also mixes in all types of fabrics, from flannel to knit to cotton.
